How to Zero Optics & Interactive Click Calculator

Plot your bullet holes on the interactive target grid below. The simulator triangulates your group's center and computes the exact number of turret clicks needed to shift your point of impact directly to the bullseye.

Side Turret (Windage): DIAL 14 CLICKS "RIGHT" Moves POI right by 1.8 inches

The Golden Rule of Turrets: The arrows marked "UP" or "R" on your optic dials move your bullet impact point (POI) on paper—they do not move the crosshair in reverse!

Mechanics Diagram

1. Understanding Turret Clicks & Directional Travel

Elevation & Windage Knobs
UP ▲ TOP TURRET (ELEVATION) Turn "UP" to raise bullet holes on paper R ▶ RIGHT TURRET (WINDAGE) Turn "R" to push bullet holes right on paper
If your shots hit LOW: Turn the elevation dial in the direction marked UP. This physically tilts the internal reticle mechanism downward, forcing the shooter to elevate the firearm barrel to re-align the dot.
If your shots hit LEFT: Turn the windage dial in the direction marked R (RIGHT). This shifts the point of impact horizontally to the right toward the center line.
Close Quarters Trajectory

2. Height-Over-Bore (Mechanical Offset): Why Close Shots Hit Low

1.5" – 2.6" Offset
OPTIC (LOS) BARREL BORE 2.5" OFFSET 5–7 YARDS Hits ~1.8" LOW ZERO CONVERGENCE (POI = POA at 50 Yds)

Key Practical Takeaway: Because an AR-15 red dot sits roughly 2.6 inches above the center of the barrel (and a pistol optic sits ~0.8" above the bore), your bullet originates lower than your sight window. At close self-defense distances (3 to 7 yards), your bullets will always land 1.5 to 2.5 inches below where your dot is placed. Always hold slightly high on close targets!

Ballistics Comparison

3. 5.56 NATO Trajectory: 50/200 Yard vs. 100 Yard vs. 36 Yard Zero

0 to 300 Yards Arc
LINE OF SIGHT (0.0") +2.0" -4.0" 50 / 200 Yd Universal Combat Zero (Max +1.8" at 120 yds) 100 Yd Flat Zero (Never rises above point of aim) 50 YDS 100 YDS 200 YDS
50/200 Yd Combat Zero: Most versatile all-around carbine zero. The bullet crosses line of sight at 50 yds, rises less than 2" at 120 yds, and drops back through zero at 200 yds.
100 Yd Flat Zero: Preferred for magnified optics and precision rifles. The trajectory touches the crosshair at 100 yds and drops continuously thereafter—you never hold under.
15/25 Yd Pistol Zero: For handgun red dots (Holosun/RMR), zeroing at 15 or 25 yards provides a flat, practical hit zone from 3 yards to 50 yards with minimal variance.
Field Procedure

5-Step Field Protocol for a Perfect Zero

1 Lock in a Rock-Solid Benchrest or Sandbag Position

Never zero an optic while standing unsupported or off-hand. Any shooter sway will ruin your adjustments. Rest your firearm securely on sandbags, a sturdy shooting rest, or a bipod with your elbows supported.

2 Boresight or Start at Close Distance (10 to 15 Yards)

Do not start at 100 yards right out of the box—you will waste expensive ammunition shooting off the paper. Fire your first confirmation shots at 10 or 15 yards to ensure bullet impact is within the paper boundary.

3 Fire a 3 to 5-Shot Group (Never Adjust for a Single Shot!)

Beginners often make the critical mistake of "chasing fliers" by turning dials after every single round. Fire a disciplined group of 3 to 5 rounds with a smooth trigger press to find your true group center.

4 Measure Group Centroid to Bullseye & Dial Turrets

Measure the horizontal and vertical distance from the center of your group to the center bullseye. Enter the numbers into our calculator above to obtain your exact click values.

5 Fire Confirmation Group & Reset Slip Turrets to Zero

Fire a final 3-shot confirmation string directly into the bullseye. Loosen your turret dial caps and slip the numerical marking to "0" without turning the internal mechanism so you have a true zero reference.
